“Mock MATNESS” Deep Dive: 165 lbs.

This is where we take a closer look at individual weight classes. The Brackets have been released for the 2024 NCAA Div. 1 Wrestling Championships and “Mock MATNESS” has now turned into legit Bracket Predictions! The 165 lbs. weight class is loaded with Top End Talent. There are fascinating and entertaining wrestlers bursting onto the scene while also occupied by a few All-Timers who are World Class Wrestlers.

WCWB - World Class Weight Bracket

1st Round: Peyton Hall takes out “Best Name” Nominee Stoney Buell. This sets up a matchup with Antrell “Rolle” Taylor or Holden Heller. We have Caleb Fish (doesn’t wrestle like one) completing the UPSET over Garrett Thompson. Another notable name is Army’s Gunner Filipowicz taking out fellow serviceman Petrucelli. Cameron Amine survives late against a tough opponent in Derek Fields.

  • Cerniglia over Mulvaney

  • Caliendo over Brenner

2nd Round: Amine hasn’t been himself and is expected to drop the match against Tough Hombre Izzak Olejnik. The match of the round comes from Peyton Hall and Taylor. Both wrestlers really wanted a crack at the top-seed and lay it all out on the line in an overtime thriller. Hall with the Fall!

  • Dean Hamiti reels in and cradles up Fish

  • Caliendo takes out Cerniglia

  • Mesenbrink easily handles Conner Brady

Quarterfinals: Keegan O’Toole nearly lost a match to Peyton Hall this season but this time around KOT scores a major decision 10-2. Counter offense in the neutral position was the main tool used in this match. Michael “Frank” Caliendo does his best impression of a title contender with the UPSET over #3 seed Julian Ramirez.

  • Carr paints a masterpiece against Hamiti 8-6

  • Mesenbrink dominates again.

Semifinals: A rivalry that never quits is the best for Wrestling or any sport. David Carr utilizing a slightly different approach picks up the 1st takedown of the match. However, a late takedown in the 2nd period that also warranted (2) back points put Keegan O’Toole ahead for good. Wrestling fans have been spoiled with this matchup and I’m sure this isn’t the last chapter.

  • Mesenbrink dominates yet again

Finals: Childhood friends. Mitchell Mesenbrink is forced to wrestle for a National Championship against long-time buddy and training partner KOT. Although this match was not made “Last Match of the NIght”, perhaps maybe it should have been. The absolute wizardry on display, both offensively and defensively, would not allow fans to look away. Mesenbrink will win multiple national championships but it will not on this day. O’ Toole gets creative in a couple scrambles and ends up ON TOP. Which then place Keegan O’ Toole ON TOP of the podium for the 3rd time! What. a. match.
